Candlebound Coven

A five-minute survivor-like inside a sleeping cat’s dream. Sister Mina carries one candle and never presses attack, because her rites cast themselves, and each level asks which of 3 to take.

The game opens on its own start screen rather than on the game. Its button starts a run, and the game was playable about 16 seconds after that press here.

5 minutes, then the dream breaks

A run is one clock, not a wave counter. The dream ends at 5 minutes, and reaching the morning is the win. Bosses wake every 45 seconds, so a run never has a quiet stretch long enough to rebuild.

The fallen leave candle motes behind, and enough of them give a level. Walking into a mote is the only way to collect it, so the run is a route through the monsters as much as a fight with them.

Rites, not attacks

You steer Mina and you pick, and that is the whole job. Every level offers 3 midnight rites: orbiting candles, homing charms, a supper chime, frost, meteors. Which one you take is the build.

The rites fire on their own, so what a run tests is the route through the dessert monsters, not the timing of a press. A build of orbiting candles wants the middle of a crowd, and a build of frost wants the crowd to arrive slowly.

A cat, a candle, a nightmare of cakes

Sister Mina is a hungry little nun cat carrying one candle into the dark, and the monsters closing in are desserts: macarons, layer cakes, iced buns with faces. The five-minute length suits the joke, because a dream that lasted an hour would stop being one, and a run that goes badly is a joke rather than a setback.

What survives a dream

Candles carry out of a run and are spent in the Coven Shop and on the Moon Tree, which holds 177 stars. Daily and weekly tasks pay alongside them, and trophies and a bestiary fill as the dreams are cleared.

There are 5 dreams to open, from the Midnight Kitchen to the Witch’s Attic, and each one opens when you survive the last. That is the progression: not a level select, a sequence of dreams that has to be reached one at a time.

How it sits beside Azeroth Survivors

Both games are one figure against a crowd, with attacks that do not need pressing and upgrades chosen from an offer of three. Both make the choice the interesting part rather than the aiming.

The difference is the clock. Azeroth Survivors runs until it kills you; Candlebound Coven gives you 5 minutes and calls the morning a win, so a run is a fixed thing you can fit between 2 other things.

What a first session looks like

Take the rite that keeps firing while you move, not the one that needs the crowd in one place. 5 minutes is short enough that a build which takes 3 levels to work never gets the chance to.

Spend the candles after the first dream rather than saving them. The Moon Tree and the shop are what make the second dream easier than the first, they cost nothing but the moment it takes to click through them, and a run that already ended still paid for them.

Questions

Is Candlebound Coven free?

Yes. It plays on this page with no account and no purchase.

What are the controls?

WASD or the arrow keys move Mina, and dragging the mouse moves her too. Clicking a rite takes it when a level lands.

Is a run really only 5 minutes?

Yes. The dream ends at 5 minutes and the run is over, win or lose, which is what makes a second one easy to start.

How often does a boss appear?

Every 45 seconds. They arrive whether or not the build is ready for them.

Does a failed run still pay?

Yes. Candles earned in a dream are spent between runs in the Coven Shop and on the Moon Tree, so a short run still moves the next one along.

What happens after I press Play?

The game opens on its own start screen first. Press the button there and it starts; nothing else on the page has to be pressed before it.

How do I leave fullscreen?

Press Esc. The game fills the screen and returns to this page when you leave it.
